Daniel TORRES Rétrospective
Presentation
Daniel Torres’s work began to attract attention in the Spanish press in the early 1980s. An architect by training, Torres was contributing pages and illustrations to El Víbora and Cairo which immediately stood out in the publishing landscape of the time, both for their creative quality and their aesthetic appeal. He quickly became the leading proponent of a stunning new version of ligne claire and by 1983 his iconic Roco Vargas character had taken the comics world by storm. It would be a mistake, however, to define Daniel Torres’s work solely through the lens of retrofuturism. His name is also very much associated with works like Sabotage and Le Huitième Jour (winner of the award for Best Graphic Novel at the Barcelona Comic Fair in 1993). Nor should we forget his numerous drawings and illustrations, which are masterfully executed and encompass a wide range of other styles.
This retrospective – due to run from Friday 30 October to Saturday 21 November 2026 at the Huberty & Breyne’s Paris | Chapon-20 gallery – is an opportunity for older generations to revisit the glorious heyday of comic book publication. For younger visitors, there’s a big surprise in store. Young and old should prepare to be blown away by the range and the sheer brilliance of this Spanish maestro!
