Claire BRETÉCHER Études
Presentation
The eye travels effortlessly over a page drawn by Claire Bretécher. Her style combines energy with suppleness and fluidity. Hers is a world where everything makes sense, a visual language that is totally free and unencumbered. What is not so obvious, however, is how many hours? work have gone into mastering this effect ? how many sketches it has taken the artist to produce the perfect line and the seemingly spontaneous drawing. Bretécher?s tracings reveal the evolution of a drawing from start to finish, enabling us to appreciate the artist?s intention as she experiments with postures, attitudes and expressions in order to capture the essence of a person in drawings that are both powerful and economical. This exhibition of preparatory sketches takes us behind the scenes, shedding light on Claire Bretécher?s artistic technique and revealing the stages that link an initial idea to its final realisation.
The Huberty & Breyne I Chapon - 21 gallery is delighted to be showing ?Études?, an exhibition of preparatory drawings on tracing paper accompanied by the publication of a limited edition catalogue. Figure studies and compositions of plates for Agrippine, Les Mères, Le Destin de Monique and Docteur Ventouse Bobologue take us to the very heart of Claire Bretécher?s creative process. The exhibition runs from 11 October to 15 November 2025.
