Presentation

In 2020, Aline Zalko was invited to run a workshop at an art school in Fort-de-France, and the following year she returned to Martinique. With no particular intention of producing a travel sketchbook as such, she set about capturing her impressions on paper. The resulting series – published in the form of a book by La Table Ronde in 2023 – conveys a vivid sense of the island’s residents and its plant life, its heat and its humidity, executed using a handful of colour pencils and a great many watercolours. In her unique and instantly recognisable style, Zalko has captured the extraordinary brilliance of Martinique, the sensations and emotions it evokes, in what amounts to an extended invitation au voyage. The West Indian island continues today to be a rich source of inspiration for the artist’s work in paint, as this exhibition amply demonstrates. And – as luck would have it – Zalko’s publishing house has also brought out three travel sketchbooks by Loustal, whose work has long since caught her eye and graces the walls alongside Zalko’s own for this exhibition hosted by the Huberty & Breyne gallery.
